A boundless mindset is an umbrella term utilized by Cinder to Flame to describe a transformation that targets thinking styles, attitudes, beliefs and feelings relevant to building a healthy corporate culture for major innovation. Let’s visualize the photo as a human who has somehow evolved into a robot, possessing heightened capabilities.

Major innovation requires building a toolkit of thinking styles that enables flexible movement between them to propel creative thinking and fuel the innovation process.

Examples of thinking styles, along with a cursory definition follow:

Convergent thinking: logical, analytical, focuses on finding one correct or best solution.
Divergent thinking: creative, seeks to generate many novel ideas or solutions without restraint.
Lateral thinking: disruptive, views a problem from different angles and unconventional perspectives.
Systems thinking: encompasses systems, their processes and how they interact together.
Integrative thinking: seeks to harmonize two or more opposing ideas to create a novel solution.
Versatile thinking: concurrent ability to hold the “big picture” perspective while drawing in essential details.

My thesis work delved into versatile thinking and Pask’s Conversation theory. I observed challenges when my study participants applied extreme holist (big picture and bottom-line) or serialist (data and detail driven) thinking.

The good news is psychological research has confirmed that while individuals exercise preferred thinking styles, they can also be learned and developed.

One’s mindset is also influenced by attitudes, beliefs and feelings. Consider the following diametrically opposed mindset descriptors: negative or positive, closed or open, lazy or energetic, narrow or broad, impossible or “can do” attitude. The latter disposition in each case is suggestive of a healthy corporate culture and boundless mindset at all corporate levels.

Experts from different fields have suggested that a shift is underway, in terms of what it means to be human. (Reflect upon the emergence and impact of Generative AI.) We are living in a new era of rapid transformation through major innovation, accelerated expansion, and advanced technology wherein we cannot predict what life may look like for the next generation.

Theoretical physicist, Dr. Geoffrey West states in his book Scale: “We live in an exponentially expanding socioeconomic urbanized world.” Others, such as Dr. Yuval Noah Harari (historian and philosopher) asserts that a balanced and resilient mindset (plus emotional intelligence) are indispensable attributes for solving current and future challenges.

A boundless mindset imposes no limits, embraces curiosity and ventures beyond traditional boundaries. It enables individuals, teams and leaders to navigate through ambiguity and disruption, persevere despite adversity and grow alongside marked change associated with major innovation.
