Cast a Light on Values

Core values are a set of principles or beliefs held by an individual or team and are the building blocks of corporate culture. Values compete and the priority changes, depending upon the perspective. The researchers, Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner have developed a deck of “values cards” that can assist with conceptualization of values.
Reflect upon your own values and compare them from a professional and personal perspective. Note any conflicts. For example, if you highly value professional growth, do you work more hours? How does this impact your work-life balance, health and well-being? Do you have time to pursue personal values that foster a healthy lifestyle?
Let’s shift the focus to values held by your team. Is your team more people or data focused? How does this differ or conflict with values held by other teams in your organization (e.g. Human Resources versus Finance)?
Corporations spend time and money designing core values, to be shared and lived by every employee. Studies such as CultureX and Culture 500 have shown limited success with articulation of values. Corporate values are inconsistently modelled by leadership teams, this impacts employee attitudes and behaviors.
For an in-depth discussion of values, search for the Schwartz Theory of Basic Values and their model that depicts the relationship between ten motivational values. At polar opposites are “conservation” (conformity or tradition) and “openness to change”.
Continuous quality (process) improvement stays closer to maintaining the status quo and is more readily embraced. Major innovation, is inspired by creative ideas and requires openness to more radical change.
Cinder to Flame helps Corporations solve complex challenges with strategic services that energize people, fuel a healthy corporate culture and ignite major innovation.
Cast a light on values. Is “innovation” among your corporate values? If yes, are champions of major innovation and more radical change welcome?
