Don Your Creativity Mask

Multiple facets of corporate culture impact creativity, examples include: the work environment, structural and procedural factors, leadership style (e.g. receptiveness to change), team dynamics, and individual creative potential. Psychology research links the latter to a combination of creative intelligence and associated behaviors.

There is broad interest in personal creativity, as evidenced by the plethora of books that provide inspiration through anecdotal stories. One common theme is to reconnect with the mindset of your inner creative child, the essence of who you were born to be.

Let’s discover how to don your creativity mask. Dig deep into your past life experience and extract a childhood story, a time when you didn’t hold back because of concern about what others might think of you. It doesn’t matter whether you accurately remember all the details and you can embellish your story with imagination between the lines.

Here’s one of my stories: When I was six years old (before three siblings arrived), I asked my father to remove the car from the garage so that I could hold a performance as a solo singer, dancer and comedian. I rounded up neighborhood kids to attend my performance, paid with empty pop bottles to cash for candy at the corner store. I recall my unrehearsed performance, as being rather dreadful. But that didn’t bother me in the slightest. I was invigorated, reading amusement on every face and joined the raucous, infectious laughter. It was a hilarious success.

What does this true story convey about me? I’m a risk taker, an aspiring performer, and possess an entrepreneurial spirit - all of which are linked to creativity. Humour, the arts, exercise and immersing oneself in nature can help adults mobilize the courage to take risks, remove restraints and unleash creative thinking.

Observe that the photo is not a singular mask; rather, a collage of masks. What would happen if everyone on your team donned their creativity mask? Major innovation is a breakthrough in creative thinking that is achieved through broad stakeholder engagement, networking and partnerships, as reported in corporate case studies of success.

Before returning to the hustle of adult life, set aside some time to discover and don your creativity mask. There is purposeful intent to this figurative language. With adulthood comes inhibition; however, when you imagine donning a mask - you’re incognito.
