A google search for “innovation celebration” yields numerous examples of celebrating innovation accomplishments across public and private service and industry sectors. Research links celebration to both mindset and a healthy corporate culture. I’ve associated celebration with chemistry because it acts as a catalyst for major innovation.
A celebration mindset is characterized by abundance, positivity and energy. This mindset sparks creative thinking, embraces disruptive ideas, and bolsters endurance (e.g. learning from failure) throughout the journey to successful implementation of major innovation.
Project management methodology tends to position celebration as the last step. However, celebration should not be reserved for the finale. It should occur with greater frequency and in small bursts, when a milestone is achieved or when your team overcomes a hurdle.
The psychology of celebration encompasses gratitude, appreciation and recognition. Celebratory feelings and gestures serve to build confidence, motivation and resilience to maintain momentum forward and refuel for subsequent challenges. Celebration may also have a positive impact on health and well-being.
How do you embed celebration in corporate culture? Here are some practical ideas:
Create a virtual notice board for celebration where everyone can post and comment.
Embed small celebratory moments into routine activities such as staff meetings.
Schedule time for celebration in your project and innovation plans.
Celebrate the “process” and not only the outcome.
Add novel ideas and “thinking-outside-the-box” to your celebration list.
Anchor change by recording successes, sharing stories and celebrating together (Kotter’s 8 Step Change Model).
Design guidelines to promote and support celebration. Become a role model for your team.
Celebrate the accomplishments of others and be willing to provide a helping hand. Studies have identified benefits for both parties in terms of building positivity and professional relationships.
