Innovation Threats for Mature Corporations

Mature Corporations are characterized as being larger in size, having an established history, possessing a wealth of internal resources and presenting a vision as an innovative leader among peer Corporations. However, mature Corporations grapple with specific threats and require a full-fledged risk strategy that includes building a healthy corporate culture for major innovation to address complex challenges today and tomorrow.
Corporate size is inversely proportional to capacity for creativity and major innovation. While structure is imperative for organizing corporate functions, the risk is creating silos within a Corporation that limit cross-functional networking, collaboration and partnerships. This restricts sharing diverse ideas, perspectives, expertise and experience. Concomitant leadership expansion augments bureaucracy and erects communication barriers that impede conjoint project work, resulting in wasted time and duplication (aka reinventing the wheel). This underutilizes internal resources and restricts their availability for major innovation. These challenges can be addressed through culture metrics and culture building strategies, focused on human capital.
Managing complexity in large Corporations requires a greater number of rigorous, detailed policies and procedures to maintain order, regulate processes, and prevent deviation. The downside of greater control is reduced flexibility and opportunity for experimentation - both are instrumental for creative thinking and innovation. Culture change for major innovation recasts operational barriers as potential enablers for major innovation.
Paradoxically, corporate history utilizing strategies with demonstrated effectiveness present another threat. Formal expertise with continuous quality (process) improvement builds an innovation culture that may have potential flaws or unrealistic expectations. Such as, the client must always be satisfied and receive the service (or product) when and how they want it. (This opposes corporate accountability identifying the highest priorities and delivering the right service, in the right way, and at the right time.) Building a healthy corporate culture targets openness and positivity to readjust mindsets, beliefs, attitudes and behaviors.
Cinder to Flame helps Corporations solve complex challenges with strategic services that energize people, fuel a healthy corporate culture and ignite major innovation.
The risk inherent in a singular strategy is of paramount importance. With continuous (quality) process improvement, additional returns will diminish as processes are perfected over time. This corporate risk can be mitigated with harmonized innovation strategies. Major innovation shifts the paradigm of service or product design and delivery, then the new normal is refined through continuous quality (process) improvement.
Corporate challenges are a moving target, what’s working now, will be insufficient in the future. Innovative Corporations of tomorrow, look beyond today’s success. This requires preparation and commitment to evolve and build a healthy corporate culture for major innovation - a process that takes time. Delay or complacency is a risk and may result in corporate regression or demise.
